The Code: Insights from the Front Lines of Leadership

The Code

A diamond cutter carefully examines the diamond rough with an understanding that it is valuable as it is. His job is to cut the diamond along its natural shape, maintaining as much of the original weight as possible. This he must do while minimizing flaws and enhancing the natural brilliance and color. The end goal is not perfection, but to raise what is already valuable in its imperfection to its maximum potential value. Mentoring leaders identify early the natural talents, abilities and unique gifts of their people. Then they carefully work with each individually to clarify the brilliance that already exists. This is accomplished by carefully chipping away at the rough edges that make it less than it could be. Mentors understand that as each individual shines brighter, the organization comes closer to reaching its potential. -Beth Lanier
