How to better understand Gen Z’s at work

We have all started to notice that Generation Z is entering the workforce all around us.

What is different about a Gen Z in the workplace?

Of course this requires a lot of generalization, since there’s not just one ‘mold’ that every Gen Z is formed within, any more than there was with any previous generation. Are you just like everyone else in your generation?

Provided in the video below is the perspective of one member of Gen Z, Delcia Petersen, about what it is like being a member of Gen Z and entering the workforce.

“We all want to be valued in an organization.” Delcia says.

She explains how interconnectivity with technology and vast information has been the norm for Gen Z’s their entire lives. This provides a vast ‘menu’ that makes changing jobs or careers appealing in the early stage of their careers in order to discover a passion. What’s beyond those early years of Gen Z in the workplace is not yet known, because the Gen Z’s haven’t been in the workforce long enough for data to compile.

According to Delcia, Gen Z’s know the type of companies of which they hope to become a part. Important to that is financial security, an enjoyable work environment both as a physical space and as it relates to peer relationships, working for a leader who cares about mental and emotional health, a strong overall sense of community at work, and a significant work-life balance. That means a clear separation of the two and being able to work for that balance.

She also says that an organization that “values me and where I can add value…” is key. She goes on to describe how Gen Z’s have much to offer, including the fresh eyes they bring to existing problems and processes. She describes how she and other Gen Z’s want opportunities to be mentored and they want to experience inclusion.

On the flip side, Delcia describes the possibility of limited attention spans and how that in turn means peak performance requires “brain breaks.” Such purposeful strategy helps Gen Z’s in the workplace focus on what matters most. In fact, modern brain science backs this up, for members of every generation.

She summarizes the Gen Z experience as: The Gen Z needs to be valued and experience a genuine connection, because that is just as important as coming home with a paycheck.
